What's the difference between a smoke detector and a carbon monoxide detector?
Smoke detectors are designed to sound when they detect smoke from a fire. Carbon monoxide (CO), unlike smoke, has no odor and is invisible—and the source is typically a malfunctioning appliance; indoor coal, wood, or charcoal fire; car exhaust; or a portable generator. Accidental carbon monoxide-poisoning deaths tend to happen during power outages in winter, when people may use a fuel-burning appliance indoors, without ventilation. You can typically buy a combined detector for both smoke and carbon monoxide.
What do I need to do before my carbon monoxide detector or smoke detector installation appointment?
Please have on hand the wired—not battery-dependent—smoke and carbon monoxide detector you've purchased, along with all wires that came with it, before your appointment. Also, most hardwired detectors require a battery as a backup power source, so you should also plan to provide that, as well.
