South Dakota is a state in the Midwestern region of America. It is divided in two by the Missouri River creating two distinctly different socioeconomically halves, known to residents as "West River" and "East River". South Dakota is known for having the largest underground gold mine (The Homestake Mine), the most decorated battleship during World War II (The U.S.S. South Dakota) and the world's largest petrified Wood Park in Lemmon.
Pierre, the state capital, is located on the Missouri River whilst the state's largest city, Sioux Falls, is located on the eastern edge. Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a monumental granite sculpture in the Black Hills. Over 60-foot high sculptures of the heads of four former United States presidents, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln are majestically displayed.
