New Hampshire is a state in the north east of the United States of America whose nickname is "The Granite State". This refers to both its geology and the self-sufficiency traditions of its people. Licence plates here carry the motto "Live Free or Die".
The natural beauty here makes tourism the main industry. The White Mountains in the central area of this state are a common destination for the major recreational activities. These include skiing, snowmobiling and other winter sports. In warmer months tourists hike, mountaineer, and holiday in cottages along the seacoast and lake fronts.
The Old Man of the Mountain was a granite stone face-like profile in Franconia Notch, until the formation fell apart in May 2003. The once popular tourist attraction can still be seen in company logos and license plates all over New Hampshire.
